Bunyas to Border (B2B) corridor update

Maree Clancy, B2B Project Coordinator, writes:

Dear Friends of Escarpment Parks,

Phase 2 of the Bunyas to Border (B2B) corridor project is now underway.    B2B is a community-driven conservation project aimed at restoring the wildlife corridor from Main Range to the Bunya Mountains: an important movement pathway for wildlife and area rich in many unique and threatened native animals and plants.

The B2B project is supported by the Great Eastern Ranges and the International Fund for Animal Welfare Koala Climate Corridors initiative.   Conservation action to facilitate wildlife movement across the landscape will help native animals adapt to climate change and build the resilience of our communities and land.

The B2B project focuses on Koala and seven other species as flagship species to guide conservation action in the corridor:

  • Koala
  • Greater Glider
  • Grey-headed Flying-fox
  • Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby,
  • Glossy-black Cockatoo
  • Rainbow Bee-eater
  • Speckled Warbler
  • Painted Button quail.

Phase 1 of B2B involved community members, local environment groups and local government and non-government bodies working together to achieve the following:

  • 2,700 native food and habitat trees and shrubs planted by 86 volunteers across 21 properties, creating over 19.5 acres of new habitat and linkage corridors for wildlife.
  • Installation of 12 modular greater glider nestboxes
  • Supply of 41 arboreal drinking stations
  • Community education events such as Koala Fest, Greater Glider Workshop and Bird and Bat Day.

This year, we are reaching out again to community groups and individuals from the Bunyas to the Border inviting your collaboration on this important and exciting landscape conservation effort.   A priority for this coming year will be the development of a conservation action plan to guide our collaboration on priority conservation projects and seek funding.   We would like to initiate this planning process with all interested parties before year’s end.

Meanwhile, we are keen to gauge the level of interest of your group or landholders you may know in undertaking a corridor planting activity in 2025 as well as other specific conservation activities within the corridor.  If you would be kind enough to distribute the attached Expression of Interest brochure and form to your members and through your networks, it would be greatly appreciated.

We also welcome you to reach out if you are interested in discussing B2B aims and opportunities for collaboration.

Kind regards

Maree
